Personality:

Lau is a quirky character in a few ways, one of the most obvious being that he tends to act as though he knows what's going on, when in reality, he doesn't. This leads to confusing many other people, or infuriating them, since he doesn't seem to do it to annoy people, but just because it's a habit he has. He's mostly playful, using his ties in order to help the Earl in whatever way he can, telling the Earl that he still finds this country interesting, which leads people to believe Lau does things for fun and is always looking for more entertainment. Something else about Lau that is noticeable (as well as amusing) is that even though he behaves strangely (i.e. stabbing a cabinet while Sebastian is inside it without a second thought, acting like he knows what's going on when he doesn't, operating an Opium Den in secret, having ties to a British-Chinese Trading Branch and forgetting this fact conveniently, behaving romantically towards his younger sister even though they aren't related by blood...), he doesn't seem to notice this at all, and seems to believe he's acting quite normally, and doesn't at all realize how other people look at him by his behavior.

Despite all this quirkiness, Lau can be quite severe in his own way, though playful and annoying most often, Lau has been seen to use a darker side of himself, when he has Ranmao kill Harold West and Meena after the Curry Contest because he doesn't want them to become competition for him in his city. Though even during this time, he kept a playful face and even said "Meow" before Harold and Meena scream (and are killed). Lastly, even though Lau often doesn't know what's going on and he pretends he does, it's often hard to distinguish when that is unless he actually admits it. There are a few scenes in which Lau will stay something, such as "There will be a storm", and something quite dark and shocking happens a bit later in the chapter. So, pretty much, Lau is an interesting individual, and you never quite know what he's going to do or say.

When it comes to goals in life, Lau is quite content with the search for pleasure and happiness, deciding that it's much more fun to live doing what you want rather than what you should want, focusing on love, entertainment and wealth. He tells the Earl that his reasons for staying in England are that the country is filled with "interesting things", and that when it stops being interesting, he will leave. He finds the most interesting to be the Phantomhive Earl himself, telling Ciel "Show me more interesting things" after the passing of Madame Red.

Lau enjoys playing on the dangerous side, often getting into risky situations, though perhaps due to his obsession with the "interesting", he takes as many risks as he can to entertain himself. For one, Black Butler takes place after the Opium War, which would make selling Opium (and smoking it) even more punishable than before, and yet he continues to run his dens, of which he has several of in England, primarily in London, selling the drug to those who wish to purchase it, describing it as "selling dreams".

Lau's main Philosophy was spoken by a Taoist Philosopher by the name of Zhou Zhangzi, "Am I a man who dreams of being a butterfly, or a butterfly who dreams of being a man?" This was actually outright stated in the anime only, though in the manga, much of Lau's imagery (when related to artwork or the patterns present on his cheongsam) depicts butterflies. Opium, being as potent as it is, is able to send someone into something akin to a deep sleep, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. In one of Lau's character songs, he says that he often feels like he's asleep while he's awake, thinking that a world so interesting couldn't possibly be real.

The Chinese Nobleman is quite prominent in the English world, seeing as he's the President of the English Trading Branch in Shanghai, so that makes him quite useful to the Phantomhive Earl, who is able to have Lau give him access to raw materials and so on. It's unknown as to how Lau started to aid Ciel in the manga, however in a drama CD, Ciel and Sebastian rescued Ranmao and Lau from an undesirable situation in which Ranmao was to be offered as a "prize" to the former leader of the Shanghai Mafia (of which Lau is now the leader of). Ciel pretended to be Ranmao and was able to thwart the former leader's plans, having Sebastian kill him. In return, Lau and Ranmao accepted their roles as playing pieces for Ciel, allowing him to use them whenever he sees fit.

At this time (at least in the manga), Lau doesn't appear to have any problems with being a playing piece, as long as things are kept interesting. It could be that he does have an ulterior motive for helping Ciel, especially considering his ominous words when he speaks to the Earl or other characters (before conveniently forgetting what he's talking about), but at this time it's not clear. It is obvious, however, that Lau is no simpleton, and there is reason for why Ciel keeps him around. Lau may play the part as the typical yes-man, but he's rather formidable, though good humored. In the Murder Mystery arc, Ciel accused Lau of being the murder by drawing attention to the medicine needles he always carries, however Lau was able to (calmly) defend himself and call attention to his alibi. He called the accusation "bullying" on Ciel's part, though it was actually quite a serious thing.

The character Patrick Phelps who was present in the same arc seemed alarmed when he took notice of Lau, after it was mentioned that he was president of the trading company Kun-lun. Lau gives a serious stare toward Phelps, causing him to look terrified. This isn't the first time we've seen Lau show this kind of expression. Ranmao, the woman he refers to as his "little sister" is actually his personal assassin as well as bodyguard, which is made quite obvious at the end of the Curry Contest when Lau has her kill both Meena and Harold. However, he did mention to Ciel that he would have killed them, though Ciel found that to be excessive, he probably didn't know that Lau was actually planning on acting on that desire.

I believe that Lau will play a very important part some time during the course of the manga and will make his intentions known. For now, though, it's safe to say he's just along for the ride.

Powers & Abilities: Lau has no powers, though in the anime he's depicted as being quite skillful with a Chinese Dao (long sword). He also has this interesting habit (both in anime and manga) to appear in random places with no explanation.

What items will they be bringing with them to Discedo? Chinese Dao, Chinese medicine needles, opium pipe, his "stash".

Posting Samples
Third-Person Sample: Stepping lightly through corridors, Lau peered his head into several rooms. The Chinese Nobleman enjoyed exploring the Phantomhive Manor, even though he was often told it was forbidden for him to do so; but Lau rarely listened when others were talking to him, so he just did as he pleased. Wrapping his fingers around a door handle, Lau slowly twisted it, smiling somewhat as the familiar "clack" of the door opening was heard. He was careful to be quiet as he entered inside the room, closing the door gently behind him so that it made not a sound. The room was lit dimly by a weak lantern, the oil inside must be running out, but there was no one else within the room. Someone had come in and left the lantern here? The oddness of the room excited Lau's curiosity, and he crept closer to the lantern.

It was rusty, the glass surrounding the light foggy with smoke and over-use. There was an armchair facing a large window next to a small table which carried the lantern, but due to night having fallen, the scenery was covered up by crimson curtains. Lau turned to face the arm-chair, only to make a small noise of surprise. Sitting in the seat was the master of the house, Earl Ciel Phantomhive, looking once again unimpressed with Lau's inability to listen properly when told he was not allowed to do something. The Chinese Nobleman feigned a look of innocence, though in his mind he was certain he was going to hear an interesting tale from the Earl, for each time they spoke, something good came from the meeting.

"Isn't it your bed time, Earl?" Lau gave a light smile, folding his arms into his sleeves. No matter the situation, however dangerous it could be, he would never hold back. It was always more fun to play a risky game... Earl Phantomhive was a very dangerous person, and yet Lau felt relaxed enough around him to tease him with his age. It was all very amusing.

First-Person Sample: I had quite the morning. You see, I'd gone to visit the Earl, hoping to take some of his breakfast from him, but when I entered the Mansion, would you believe who I saw standing there? It was none other than the Phantomhive Butler! I could have sworn he was dead, after all, there was blood pouring out of his mouth and his heart had been stabbed through quite viciously. And yet, there he was, looking as though he'd never received any kind of injury. Well, as curious as that was, I couldn't just stand there staring at him. The Earl and I ate breakfast together that morning, I really like the food that the Butler prepares. Blueberry scones with fresh butter, like a morning dessert. Of course, that wasn't all I'd come to do at the Earl's mansion... Indeed, I had some news to report to him. All good things must come to an end... And with that, so did our breakfast, as I shared the news of mysterious disappearances happening on board a cruise ship...
